AI Agents: why the real revolution is not AI, but the automation of decisions

Artificial intelligence enters a new phase

Over the past two years, companies have become familiar with chatbots and virtual assistants capable of answering questions, generating content and supporting users in their daily activities.

Today, we are entering a different phase.

The goal is no longer simply to get an answer from AI, but to delegate to it the execution of operational and decision-making tasks within business processes.

This is where AI Agents come into play: intelligent systems able to understand an objective, access the necessary data, choose the most appropriate actions and carry them out by interacting with applications, workflows and people.

The real novelty, then, is not the ability to "talk", but to "act".

From assistant to agent

A traditional chatbot responds.

An AI Agent works.

It can consult the ERP, retrieve information from the CRM, check the status of an order, compare data coming from multiple systems and automatically trigger follow-up actions.

In practice, the agent does not merely provide information: it becomes an integral part of the business process.

Take, for example, customer order management. Today, several operators are often involved in checking availability, commercial terms, delivery times and payment status.

An AI Agent could automatically gather this information from different systems, identify any issues and propose or carry out the most appropriate action.

The process becomes the real protagonist

For a long time, digital transformation focused on the adoption of new technologies.

With the arrival of AI Agents, the focus returns to what truly generates value: processes.

An intelligent agent is effective only if it understands the operational context in which it must act, the rules to follow, the data to use and the objectives to pursue.

For this reason, organisations that have invested over the years in application integration, data governance and process optimisation now start from a position of advantage.

Artificial intelligence does not replace these elements: it makes them even more important.

Where AI Agents can create value

The opportunities involve practically every business function.

Finance

Agents can monitor financial flows, identify anomalies, support forecasting activities and prepare reports for management.

Supply chain

They can detect supply delays, propose corrective actions and automatically coordinate communications between departments and suppliers.

Customer service

They can handle complex requests by retrieving information from different systems and orchestrating activities that would normally require the involvement of several operators.

Human resources

They can support onboarding, document management and administrative processes, reducing repetitive, low-value activities.

Why many companies are not yet ready

Enthusiasm around AI Agents is high, but there is a challenge that is often underestimated.

Agents can be as intelligent as we like, but they cannot operate effectively if data is fragmented, systems do not communicate with one another and processes are not defined.

Without a reliable information base, the risk is to amplify inefficiencies that already exist.

In other words: before building intelligent agents, it is necessary to build a connected digital ecosystem.

ERP, CRM, integration platforms, document management systems and governance tools thus become essential components of the same strategy.

From artificial intelligence to Process Intelligence

For an AI Agent to deliver concrete results, it is not enough for it to be technologically advanced. It must be able to operate within clear, efficient and governed processes. For this reason, many organisations are complementing the adoption of artificial intelligence with Process Intelligence initiatives, with the aim of understanding how processes really work, identifying inefficiencies and bottlenecks, and pinpointing the areas where automation can create the greatest value.

At Impresoft, we help companies turn the data generated by their processes into useful information to make more informed decisions and improve operational performance. Through solutions and expertise dedicated to Process Intelligence, we support organisations in the continuous monitoring of processes, the analysis of inefficiencies and the building of improvement paths that form the ideal foundation for introducing truly effective AI Agents.

Because artificial intelligence can accelerate a process, but only an in-depth understanding of how that process works can turn it into a lasting competitive advantage.
